Does Puper Get Out of Chicago in Orange New Black

Orange is the New Black: Season 2 recap

It's time to return to Litchfield as we give our official recap of Orange is the New Black Season 2.

Netflix's smash hit Orange is the New Black will unleash its fourth season on June 17, so to help refresh your memory on all the crazy that's been going on, we're going to take a walk down the halls of Litchfield Penitentiary.

Season 1 ended with the brawl between the series' main protagonist Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett (Taryn Manning) that left both characters fates in the balance.

And Season 2, Episode 1 "Thirsty Bird" picked up right after as Chapman is transferred from solitary confinement to a maximum security prison in Chicago to testify against Kubra, the drug kingpin that she'd been previously associated with and got put in prison for in the first place. Ex-girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) convinces her to lie on the stand, and Chapman complies. Later in the episode, she finds out that Alex didn't go along with the plan, and once again, Chapman has taken the fall in the name of love. Further, her lawyer, Howard Bloom (Todd Sussman), drops her as a client.

In an episode directed by Jodie Foster (yeah, the Jodie Foster), the focus centers around the aftermath of Chapman's fight with Pennsatucky as we're also introduced to Lolly Whitehill (Lori Petty) and her ear-full of vaseline. Whitehill disappears for the rest of the season, but reemerges in Season 3 as a paranoid Litchfield inmate.

Continuing the theme of using flashbacks to explain inmates' backstories, Episode 2 "Looks Blue, Tastes Red" shows us the origin of Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson (Danielle Brooks). A smart kid with a penchant for math, Taystee is cycled through foster homes throughout much of her young life. At an adoption fair, she meets a drug-dealer named Yvonee "Vee" Parker (Lorraine Toussaint) who gives her the nickname "Taystee" for her love of icees.  Eventually, Vee becomes a mother figure to Taystee as she enters into the world of drug-dealing, but when Taystee is in danger of going to prison, Vee is nowhere to be found. Not until the end of the episode, in present day, when Vee gets her orange jumpsuit and joins the rest of inmates at Litchfield.

It's also revealed that Pennsatucky is fine post-fight with Chapman and makes a deal with Officer Sam Healy (Michael J. Harney) to lie about the events of the fight in exchange for a new set of teeth. Galina "Red" Reznikova (Kate Mulgrew) struggles to get back on her feet after losing the kitchen. Her commissary supply runs low and she is forced to join to the early bird crew as she's ostracized by her former companions.

Red's problems continue to grow in Episode 3 "Hugs Can Be Deceiving" when she finds out that former nemesis, Vee, is back in. And so is Piper, who is tranferred back to Litchfield along with Brook Soso (Kimiko Glenn).

Elsewhere, Officer John Bennett (Matt McGorry) is forced to smuggle contraband in through his prosthetic leg after his baby mama, Dayanara "Daya" Diaz (Dascha Polanco), suffers from constipation.

The flashback focus of this episode is Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren (Uzo Aduba), who has been mentally unstable for most of her life. Adopted by a white couple (who later had another "miracle" daughter), Suzanne was a social outcast and often shunned from the community. In spite of her adoptive parents' best efforts, Suzanne is unable to conquer her stage fright, and it's later revealed in this episode that Suzanne was the one who punched Chapman in the face during the fight with Pennsatucky, inadvertently saving Chapman from serious punishment by making it look like a fair fight.

Vee uses Suzanne's social ineptitude and vulnerability to her advantage as she recruits Suzanne as the first member of her new prison gang, a role that Taystee had previously rejected.

The first business endeavor that Vee tries to embark on is selling Poussey Washington's (Samira Wiley) moonshine, but Poussey rejects her offer in Episode 4 "A Whole Other Hole."

Also in this episode, we're treated to a little more insight on Lorna Morello's (Yael Stone) background. Her obsession with Christopher is plotted out as it's revealed that she only had one date with him before he decides not to let the relationship go any farther. Apparently, Morello never gets the message as she goes on to stalk and harass him, even when he gets a new girlfriend and takes out a restraining order against her. When not pursuing Christopher, Morello runs a mail-order scam that eventually earns her a spot at Litchfield, where, in present time, she escapes from briefly to break into Christopher's home.

Red's new venture in the shed continues to grow as she plants and goes back to her old smuggling ways, and the inmates take some … anatomy lessons.

In Episode 5 "Low Self-Esteem City," Litchfield's screwed-up budget takes its toll on the inmates in the form of plumbing problems. Gloria Mendoza (Selenis Leyva) and her crew decide to invade the ghetto bathroom after dirty toilet water comes up through the shower drain, causing Vee and Mendoza to engage in a battle for territory. As revealed through flashbacks, Mendoza was previously in an abusive relationship and committed fraud through the convenience store she ran.

Piper's brother and mother come to visit and announce that Piper's grandmother is sick (through a hilarious guessing game bit), prompting Piper to request furlough to go visit her.

The contest between Carrie "Big Boo" Black (Lea DeLaria) and Nicky Nichols (Natasha Lyonne) escalates to the point where Nicky attempts to reel in Officer Susan Fischer (Lauren Lapkus), to no avail.

By Episode 6 "You Also Have a Pizza," the inmates share their definitions of love in a Valentines-themed episode that focused on Poussey's backstory of being an army brat in Germany.

Red's import business continues to grow with the help of her son, Vasily. Also looking for help is Larry Bloom (Jason Biggs), who hopes to use Piper as a Litchfield mole in an effort to write an exposé and revitalize his writing career. She declines, and they trade words about Larry being the moon and Piper being the sun: "Anyone gets near the sun, they burn right up." Instead, she goes poking around for her own gain, and eventually, tells Healy she'll be starting a newsletter (with his blessing, of course.)

Because love is in the air, Joe Caputo (Nick Sandow) tries his hand at wooing CO Fischer, and invites her to come check out his bar band, Side Boob. He comes up short when he realizes that Fischer didn't come to see the band alone, and further, cozies up to fellow Litchfield staff member, Joel Luschek (Matt Peters). While licking his wounds, Caputo realizes that inmate Jimmy Cavanaugh (Patricia Squire), who is highly delusional, has escaped.

Finally, Vee reveals her tobacco idea, much to the delight of all the inmates.

And her business continues to grow going into Episode 7 "Comic Sans"as the cigarettes are dispersed to inmates in exchange for stamps, other items, and some favors.

Meanwhile, Mendoza's latina crew blackmail CO Bennett into smuggling in more stuff for them, and Red starts paying back some of her debts by giving Sophia Burset (Laverne Cox) styling products and gummy bears.

Thanks to Jimmy's escape, Caputo starts cracking down on the Correctional Officers, who then start dealing out shots left and right to the inmates. At the end of the episode, Jimmy, who very obviously needs constant care in her mentally-ill state, is given a "Compassionate Release" to cut costs of putting her somewhere else.

The flashback for this episode is Cindy "Black Cindy" Hayes (Adrienne C. Moore). As a former TSA agent, she is shown to be very unprofessional and often steals from people's luggage. In one instance, she steals an iPad and regifts it to her little sister, Monica, who is later revealed to actually be Cindy's daughter.

Piper nominates Morello to be her second-in-command and the first newsletter features Caputo on the front page.

Outside of Litchfield, Polly and Larry grow closer.

Thanks to Piper's newsletter initiative and some egging from other inmates, Healy grants her request for furlough in Episode 8 "Appropriately Sized Pots," which angers a lot of the other inmates.

Caputo continues to get squeezed to tighten up, and eventually terminates CO Fischer, who openly expressed outrage over the new penalty system that required officers to exaggerate their authority to fill the shot quota. He goes on a witchhunt to find how contraband is being sneaked in and winds up in Red's greenhouse, where he trashes her plants and accuses her of getting back into the game. Thanks to Mendoza, he finds nothing and later apologizes.

Rosa Cisneros' (Barbara Rosenblatt) backstory is explored in this episode. During one of her chemotherapy treatments, she opens up to a young patient about her past as a cursed bank robber. Every time she robbed a bank, a man close to her died. Fearing that her new chemo-companion has received tragic news, Rosa breaks down and has a vulnerable moment. Then, he announces that he's actually in remission and Rosa feels much better.

After being harassed enough to annoy her and takes a cake to the head from Suzanne, Piper asks Healy to rescind her furlough, but he doesn't oblige, and instead, tells her to be grateful and spend the time wisely. When Piper calls her family to share the news, they let her know that her grandmother has already passed.

And at the end of the episode,

Pornstache returns.

Regardless of her grandmother's death, Piper still gets a bit of freedom in Episode 9 "40 Oz. of Furlough."

With 48 hours to stay away from booze, drugs, and fun, Piper's brother comes to pick her up from Litchfield and takes her to see Larry. They attempt to reconnect at Piper's grandmother's funeral, but Larry admits that he slept with someone else, though does not name Piper's best friend, Polly Harper (Maria Dizzia). Later, Piper tries to give a eulogy about "life's mistakes," but can't hold herself together. Her brother steps in and announces that he's going to get married. Like, right then and there.

Back in Litchfield, Red picks up a lot of spices from commissary, where Vee has just enough time to get in a few jabs before Red tells her to mind her own business. With her crate of spices in tow, Red begs Nicky to gather the old gang together for dinner at Red's greenhouse.

The relationship between Vee and Red are further explored in the episode's flashbacks that go back to when Red first arrived as Litchfield. Using her previous vendor from her family's store, Vee (who has been in before) encourages Red to start smuggling to survive. Or at least, smuggle until Vee is ready to take over the business, as she eventually tries to do. The ever-defiant Red says no and Vee instructs her then-crew to beat Red up.

In the present, Red's family comes back together, just as Big Boo reveals to Vee how Red is able to sneak contraband in.

The episode ends with ultra-frustrated Bennett, who has found himself in Caputo's office after an outburst, naming Mendoza as the father of Daya's baby.

In Episode 10 "Little Mustachioed Sh-t," the consequences of Bennett's actions are seen when Mendez is arrested for allegedly impregnating Daya. As he's escorted out by police at the end of the episode, he shouts out that he loves Daya and he will find a way to take care of her.

Through various flashbacks, we see more of the early stages of Piper and Alex's relationship. Before dating Piper, Alex was in a relationship with Sylvie, who she repeatedly cheated on with Piper, while still claiming that she wasn't "shady." Let's be honest, shady people are a dime-a-dozen in Litchfield, so no one actually believes Alex. At one point in the flashbacks, they say they love each other, prompting present-day Piper to finally open (the now free) Alex's letter when she finds out Larry slept with Polly.

The tension between Vee and the other inmates continues to rise, particularly with Rosa, who doesn't buy into Vee's charm. When the bunks are thoroughly checked out for contraband, several cigarettes are found in Janae Watson's (Vicky Jeudy) bunk. As she's being taken to SHU, she looks at Vee, expecting her to intervene, but of course, she does not. Further, Vee confronts Red in the greenhouse, and Poussey confronts Vee in the bathroom, only to be assaulted by Vee's guard dog, Suzanne.

Piper returns from her furlough and is greeted by Red's open arms, who is excited to hear about her store, though Piper only dwells on Larry's cheating. Red lets it go for a bit and finds out from Sophia that Sophia's son is going to visit. Previously, Sophia's son has shown a lot of anger toward her, but Sophia understands his frustration, whereas Red admits she would simply beat some sense into him. They bond over their differing parenting skills.

Pennsatucky and Healy discuss starting a support group. Through the second season, Pennsatucky has been shunned from her old crew because of her arrogance and a new perspective on life post-fight. She fails to find a new crew to assimilate with and tells Healy that her state of mind is at a 4.

Morello's old "boyfriend" Christopher visits the prison and says he know it was Morello who broke into the house, then threatens her to stay away.

As is the case with many villains on television, Vee continues to rise to power as other inmates plot to destroy her, with little to no success. In Episode 11 "Take a Break from Your Values," Red's elders crew attempt to kill Vee, but end up stabbing the wrong woman.

Brook Soso, who's spent most of the season annoying the crap out of other inmates, once again finds a way to irk Sister Ingalls. Through the episode's flashbacks, we learn how Sister Ingalls got excommunicated through a series of protests and vandalism that eventually led to her arrest. In present-day, she passes out during the hunger strike and struggles with her faith.

Piper puts an ad for Healy's support group, Safe Place, into the newsletter, and asks for Alex to be added to her call list, to which he complies. As Pennsatucky later hands out fliers, Vee urges Suzanne to join the group and keep an eye on Poussey. Later, when Piper and Alex get a chance to talk, Piper finds out that Kubra was never sentenced and is still free. Healy tells Piper that she is going to be transferred to Virginia (because she keeps snooping around and Larry did a radio show), coincidentally, on the same day that Alex was supposed to visit.

Minor notes: Polly tells her husband that she and Larry had an affair, and Red confronts Big Boo about being a snitch.

By Episode 12 "It Was the Change," Red decides to take matters with Vee into her own hands after the Golden Girls mistakenly stabbed the wrong person.

An actual storm hits Litchfield and the inmates are forced to sleep in the cafeteria, where Red and Vee both fear attacks from the opposing crews. Poussey ruins Vee's tobacco supply. In response, Vee releases Taystee from the group. Later, Vee meets Red in the greenhouse where she reminds Red of how things turned out last time, but Red doesn't give in and spits in Vee's face. Before the situation escalates, someone walks by. Towards the end of the episode, Vee corners Red again and slocks her.

After getting a lecture on the "lesbian agenda" from Healy, Pennsatucky asks Big Boo some questions and the pair bond over their estrangement from their respective groups.

In a flashback, it's revealed that Vee had set up Taystee's friend/brother RJ by bribing a cop and getting him killed.

The finale, Episode 13 "We Have Manners. We're Polite," focuses on Vee's inability to keep her "family" together.

Now that Taystee and Poussey have made up, Taystee regains the courage to defy Vee. Further igniting her paranoia, Nicky steals from Vee's stash, so Vee tries to coax Suzanne into taking the fall for her, but Healy gets Luschek to sign a work order that gives Suzanne an alibi for where she was when Red was attacked.

Piper, who was able to break into the office during a power outage, reveals Assistant Warden Natalie "Fig" Figuroa's (Alysia Reiner) embezzlement scandal to Caputo. When he confronts him, Fig attempts to buy his silence, but he declines and she resigns. As Caputo becomes the new Assistant Warden, Bennett admits that he impregnated Daya, but Caputo doesn't really do anything about it because he just rose to power.

Also, Piper and Alex finally get to visit with each other and make up. Alex announces that she's leaving town because she's afraid that Kubra is hunting her, but Piper relays the information to Polly and sets Alex up to get caught, and therefore, sent back to prison for violating her parole.

Vee uses Red's greenhouse tunnel to escape the prison, but Rosa, who has just found out her chemotherapy treatment is not working and she has little time to live, resigns to her fate. In a sympathetic gesture, Morello leaves the van's keys in the ignition and gives Rosa the opportunity to escape. On her way out, Rosa sees Vee in the street and hits her with the van.
